Katherine Highet, lovingly known as Kat, is a talented artist and musician on the autism spectrum. As a child, Kat faced significant challenges — at age 8, she had a vocabulary of only about 100 words, lived in her own world, struggled to communicate, and often expressed herself through screams rather than words. She worked incredibly hard for many years, putting in 60–80 hour weeks to build her skills. Today, Kat greets visitors with a bright smile, asks curious questions, and happily shares stories about her day. Though her verbal communication is still limited, her kindness, enthusiasm for learning, and love for people are boundless. She thrives on trying new things and works with dedication on everything she creates. Much of Kat’s growth and self-expression has come through the arts. Ceramics painting has become one of her greatest passions. In this unique medium, she paints on ceramic pieces which are then fired in a kiln, making each creation permanent and durable. Every piece brings an element of delightful surprise, as glazes and heat interact in unpredictable, beautiful ways. Kat has developed her own vibrant, eye-catching style, transforming ordinary ceramic items into colorful works of art. Many of the pieces she paints are created by her, her mom, and fellow artists who generously share their work with her. What began as an impossible dream more than 30 years ago has now become a beautiful reality. Kat’s Cafe & Kat’s Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, is a warm, welcoming space where Katherine continues to learn, make friends, and build community.
