Our Story

This online store is an extension of a dream — one we hope will reach others, inspire fellow artists and families, and bring more joy and art into everyday life.

Kat’s Cafe & Kat’s Arts is a legacy born from our autism journey with our daughter Katherine. At 8 years old, Katherine had a vocabulary of about 100 words and lived in her own quiet world — unable to communicate, unable to connect, as though she existed in a parallel universe just beside our own. She couldn’t interact with her sister or the people around her. When she didn’t want something, she would scream, because words weren’t yet available to her.

What followed were decades of relentless love and work — 60 to 80 hour weeks, year after year — and the unwavering belief that she could grow.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. We could build one with all the extraordinary people who helped Katherine become who she is today. She learned how to learn. She learned how to play the harp and piano. She opened up — to us, to the world, to herself.

Today, Katherine will greet you with a warm smile and probably ask you a lot of questions. She works hard at everything she does and lights up around people. She has discovered a deep passion for pottery, plays the harp and piano for guests at Kat’s Cafe, and continues to grow in ways we once thought impossible.

What began as an impossible dream more than 30 years ago is now real. Kat’s Cafe is the place where Katherine shares her gifts, builds community, and keeps becoming. We never gave up hope — and this story ends in triumph.

We believe anything is possible. Anybody can learn. Anybody can grow. We’d love for you to be part of it.
